Matt is a native South Carolinian, but he calls Atlanta, Georgia home. He came to serve as Minister to Students and Young Adults at Pritchard Memorial in September of 2009. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, Mercer University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communication from the University of Georgia. Most recently he served as Minister of Students at Parkway Baptist Church in the Atlanta area. While in college, Matt met his wife Lelia, and the two were married in Athens, Georgia, the home of their beloved Bulldogs, on May 17, 2008. As a pastor’s son, Matt has seen the ins and outs of congregational ministry, and he is excited about serving with the students and young adults of Pritchard Memorial.

What do you love about the people at PMBC?

They are incredibly loving, and welcomed us with open arms the moment we arrived in Charlotte. I look forward to getting to know everyone much better in the future.

What is currently playing on your ipod?

Van Morrison, Dave Matthews, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Hootie and the Blowfish, Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, Eva Cassidy, Adrian Duke (from Raleigh, and he played at our wedding), Stevie Wonder, and Marc Broussard When it comes to music I’ll try anything once.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

My favorite passage is Matthew 22:37-40. “Jesus said to him ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” It’s basically my philosophy of ministry.

What do you do to refresh your soul?

Spend time with Lelia, play golf (although I usually end up more frustrated), run, read, sleep, pray, and spend time with friends.

Other somewhat interesting facts…

When I was 23 I went skydiving in Switzerland. In 6th grade I walked through a Pyramid in Egypt, swam in the Dead Sea, and touched the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. In 8th grade I walked through the steps of Paul in Greece. These are life changing things that everyone should have the chance to do.
